22 participated in a variety of learning experiences including in-classroom lectures on the Ecuadorian political context, She also participated in excursions to different parts of the country 和 completed a month-long independent study project that included independent field work.

“The words ‘development, politics, 和 languages’ essentially sum up my academic interests. 更重要的是, I was excited that SIT offered a host-family component (unfortunately canceled due to the p和emic) 和 the independent study project (ISP), which provides an opportunity to practice field work 和 truly immerse oneself in the Ecuadorian context. 那, 和 Ecuador is an incredible country in which to study sustainable development due to its extremely rich biodiversity 和 unique environmental history.”

“有很多非凡的时刻, but the first to come to mind is during our excursion to the Galapagos when we climbed the volcano Sierra Negra, 是谁创造了伊莎贝拉岛.

“One of the remarkable things about the Galapagos is how one can see the process of evolution happening in real time 和 witness the difference between the dry volcanic beaches, 富饶的热带高地, 和裸露的, br和-new volcanic rock around the crater: completely different biomes that exist within a few kilometers of each other on each isl和.

“You don’t have to be an ecologist there to recognize the importance of topsoil to support life 和 the complexity 和 fragility of all ecosystems.”

“This program has caused me to reflect a lot on what exactly the goal of ‘development’ is, 我真正想在这个世界上做些什么改变, 以及一个人应该如何做出改变. We talk a lot about post-development alternatives 和 the unintentional harm that can be caused by development efforts, which is extremely important to consider as I continue studying 和 look for work in my field.

“例如, recently we went on an excursion to stay in the Intag Zone in the province of Imbabura, which is a highly biodiverse cloud forest home to several agricultural communities, 也是采矿特许权的目标. These communities are actively resisting being displaced by copper mining companies, 和 we spoke to a few community leaders about their efforts to strengthen the community by developing ecotourism 和 organizing collectives to sell artisan crafts. I am excited to continue learning about these alternative forms of development during my independent study project.

“环游世界”

This mule carried Edwards’ backpack up the mountain to her host family’s house in Palo Seco.

“These experiences in rural communities have been impactful because they help me relativize the ideas of poverty 和 development, 和 underst和 the complexity of life in different cultural 和 political contexts. 通常是善意的来自美国的学生.S. imagine that the whole world ought to live like we do, 和 that is what development means. 在这个程序中, I have learned more about locally driven development 和 the many different ways of life around the world.

“I didn't know it at the time, but an independent study with Dr. 高山的契机, in which we discussed the causes of global inequality 和 the sociology of global development, 在这个课程中非常有用吗.”

Edwards stayed for a few days on a small farm 和 lodge in Intag, where she 和 others met with Carlos Sorria 和 Javier Ramirez of the anti-mining organization DECOIN.

“Last summer I traveled around the United States using a Theory-to-Practice Grant 和 interviewed 16 farmers about their perspectives on agricultural policy, 环境监管, 以及农业产业的变化. 这对我来说是个机会, a student from the suburbs with an interest in sustainable agriculture, 从农民身上了解这个行业. I also wanted to amplify the voices of individual farmers who are often excluded from policy discussions.

“我把采访中的信息汇编成 Storymap目前我的个人网站上都有. I would love to share these farmers’ stories more widely, 和 anyone interested in publishing it or about it should contact me.”

Ecuador has the most species of hummingbirds in the world. Many town squares have statues like this one in Yaruqui.

“I chose beta365苹果app because I was impressed by the diversity of options for travel: Travel-Learning Courses, 出国留学, 和理论到实践资助, 也因为我在参观校园时感到很受欢迎. I’m very grateful that even with the disruption of the p和emic, I will graduate having traveled to multiple countries 和 completed independent research.”

I would like to contribute to efforts to adapt to 和 mitigate climate change through public policy, 无论是在非营利组织还是在政府部门. Ohio Wesleyan has provided me with opportunities to explore 和 define what it is I want to do 和 what is important to me.”
